Default Who Needs Retirement, Anyway?

Quote:
“I will not retire while I’ve still got my legs and my makeup box,” said Bette Davis.

“Retirement at 65 is ridiculous,” said George Burns. “When I was 65 I still had pimples.”

“Retirement is the ugliest word in the language,” said Ernest Hemingway.

These words are meant as consolation for those who may think of retirement in more favorable terms — as a time for relaxation, learning, service, travel and fun — but who see it receding unattainably into the future as their retirement accounts and personal wealth dwindle.

According to a survey from the Employee Benefit Research Institute, more workers are losing confidence in their ability to retire comfortably, and they name the economy, inflation and the cost of living as among the reasons.

“Sooner or later I’m going to die,” said Margaret Mead, “but I’m not going to retire.” Presumably that was her choice. But some of today’s workers are afraid that they will have no choice but to keep working.

I think the notion of retirement is one of recent vintage. Back in the days before social security most people expected to work as long as they were physically able to (of course life expectancies were shorter too). It will be interesting to see how much differently my generation does it since we aren't expecting that we will ever see social security anyway.

A very nice discussion being started here.

A Pew Research survey found nearly 4 in 10 workers over age 62 say they have delayed their retirement because of the recession.

The recent retirement losses have prompted policymakers to discuss whether Americans need a stronger social safety net, not just in health care and unemployment benefits, but in retirement as well.

I like to think of retirement as "not having to work for money, freeing myself up to work on less lucrative endeavors."
I will always work, but one day I will no longer need to take compensation into account.
