I hope I'm in the right place. :-) I searched the IRS
website and couldn't find any answers. I live in Toronto,
but am a US citizen. I worked in the US for a long time. I
now need copies of my old W-2's for disability filing
through the Soc. Sec. Does anyone know how I go about
getting those copies from the IRS? TIA I appreciate it.

You have a few options:
1. You can call the Social Security Administration
(800-772-1213) and request the information. They should
copies of old W-2 forms on microfilm. If you are requesting
them for s Social Security related claim, there should be no
charge to get the copies. If the claim is for other
purposes, there will be a charge of $37 per W-2 form.
2. You might be able to get them from your employer.
3. You can file Form 4506 to request a copy of the tax
returns for the relevant years. The copies will include all
attachments (including W-2 forms). There is a charge of
$39.00 per return. The IRS only keeps copies of returns for
7 years.
4. You can file Form 4506-T to request a transcript of your
W-2 information. There is no charge to order a transcript.
The IRS keeps information for the last 10 years.

IRS maintains 6 years of information returns, i.e. Forms
W-2, 1099, etc., in its masterfile database. The most
recent year added is 2004. That means you currently can
obtain copies of your Forms W-2 from IRS for years 1999
through 2004. IRS does not charge any fee for providing the
information.
There are two ways to go about securing the information.
You can submit
IRS Form 4506-T ( http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506t.pdf ).
Form 4506-T can be faxed to the IRS Philadelphia office at
(215) 516-2555. If you use Form 4506-T, check the box to
the right of line 8 and indicate the periods requested on
line 9. If you need more than 3 years worth, you will need
to complete more than one Form 4506-T.
Alternatively, you can visit your closest IRS walk-in
office, which I would assume is in New York.
http://www.irs.gov/localcontacts/index.html
IRS has an office that maintains Form W-2s 10 years back.
That office is known as the Wage and Information Retrieval
Service (WIRS). The WIRS office probably can get copies of
your Forms W-2 back as far as 1995, but no further back than
that. If you need copies of Forms W-2 for years prior to
1999, you need to write a letter asking IRS to secure them
from WIRS for you. That process takes up to 6 weeks. That
letter also could be faxed to the number I provided above.
One last thing, if you haven't kept your address current
with IRS, also fax a copy of Form 8822
(http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8822.pdf ) to have them
load your current address into their masterfile.
Good luck to you.

This is an afterthought to my previous reply. Request the
information you need through normal IRS channels. However,
if you don't get a reply or you receive an unresponsive
answer, contact the International Taxpayer Advocate.

Thanks for the info, Chris. I appreciate it. I'm from
Toronto and a lot of those toll-free numbers can't be used
from here so I may have to just write to the IRS.

Thanks so much for taking the time to get all that info for
me, Frederick. I did get your email. I tried emailing you
to thank you, but it bounced back to me. That's why I did a
separate post here to you. :-) Thanks again for all your
help.

Here's a link to phone numbers for the Social Security
Administration that can be used when calling from outside
the U.S.
http://www.socialsecurity.gov/foreign/phones.html
You could also call the Niagra Falls NY social security
office at 716-283-1066.
