Anyone remember Chuck Clough? |
|
|
He worked for Merrill Lynch some time ago and was a frequent guest on CNBC.
This was a long time ago. I always trued to catch him when he was on.
Anyway, he left ML and started up his ownn firm, Clough Capital Partners.
Last year he started a CEF and I've been casually watching it. Doing well.

I don't want to buy it here but I wouldn't be surprised if I owned it
sometime between now and the end of next year.

You're welcome. He also has a global equity fund:

I think I favor the Global Allocation Fund but I'm keeping an eye on both of
them.
These new CEF's often fall into a discount after a year or so, I'm waiting
for that and/or more positive market conditions.
I always enjoyed his commentary when he appeared on CNBC, he's pretty sharp. |

I never get market conditions right (except to note that I make money
when people are bearish and worried, and lose it when they are
bullish).
I agree the discount is the thing to look for in a CEF. With
arbitrageurs/ hedge funds chasing these things, it will be rare to get
a discount as low as 10% (eg the Salomon fund a consistent 20% discount
fund for years, is now being raided) whereas 15% was often reachable in
the past. It will require another financial crisis a la Mexico, Russia
or Long Term Capital Mgmt to get back to those levels I feel.

In the days when I read such things, his commentary made a lot of sense
to me. He has seen everything in markets for over 20 years and began
his career I think in the 70s when markets where much more like they
are now than they were in the 80s and 90s.
The funds could be a useful diversifier to an investor (call it 'value/
catalyst' in orientation).
Once again, thank you. |
