Default financial aid and 529

I understand that me investing in a 529 Plan can impact my kid's financial aid package. What I'm trying to get a handle on is just how important this could be. By that I mean is the potential payoff in financial aid so prodigious that I should forgo the 529 plan?

When I went to state college back in the Eighties I wasn't eligible for financial aid (maybe I filled out the forms wrong because we weren't that affluent of a family). Only one of my friends that I know of received grant money and from what I remember it wasn't substantial. For an average middle class family does financial aid to a state school typically subtract the thinnest of slivers from a kid's college bill or a big bite?

I think it does. the policy varies from one place to another. Though I can tell you the details because I have no primary idea about it. Though from the looks of it I can say it will be pretty hard.

In addition to the primary sources of financial aid (loans and scholarships), other kinds of aid are available to many students. These other types of aid fall into eight broad categories:
1. Free Scholarship Lotteries
2. Federal and State Government Aid
3. College-Controlled Aid
4. Student Profile-Based Aid
5. Aid for Graduate and Professional School
6. Aid for Elementary and Secondary School
7. Aid for Specific Activities
8. Innovative Programs
