A year or two ago, I started with just a mutual fund or two. I now have quite a few things to keep track of(iras, 401ks, 457s, stocks,
bonds, cds, money markets, mutual funds, and a few more, and don't feel comfortable, with yahoo or some other web site, knowing my business, and don't want to have to go investment to investment every day or two. Do any of you, use any type of software, that will keep track of your portfolio, without sharing it with the world? I don't need a money manager or bill payer or anything. Just something I can hit a button, and see what my investments did for the day, and the accumulated value, and if its possible, keep track of performance history. Is there any such animal? One more thing also, if it would keep track of savings bonds also, it would be appreciated. While I dont currently invest in them, they have been invested for me, by family my whole life, and some are probably coming into maturity. I currently use the free government tracker, but would like if possible keep track on the same thing with my investments. Thanks for any info. |

Keeping track is basically two phase, (1)what's it doing today on My Yahoo, and (2) Excel for exact dates, figures, few notes, and whatever formula applies. Performance history is pushing your luck - especially if your a timer or chartist, and care to elaborate. Plain and simple PH - Yahoo's 3mnth, 1yr profiles. The rest is research and ability. A supermarket fund center is a step above where I was two years ago, beyond which, I'd have to stop procrastinating about challenging the local day-trader centre, get a real job, and change my nick to Daddy BigBucks. |

I use a series of linked Excel spreadsheets. One sheet has a list of my funds symbol (if it exists) and a name for the institutional ones in my 401K. For the moment, I just fill out the prices on a daily basis. My other spreadsheets reference the Prices.xls spreedsheet. I use spreadsheet for each of my IRA's, with the first tab being a "Summary (for that fund)", and a tab for each fund in that IRA. The Asset Allocation (AA) spreadsheet is linked to both the Prices.xls and the IRA.xls spreadsheets and combines all the investments into one portfolio. Other tabs in the AA spreadsheet breakout the investments across style categories and then sum the totals up to provide a complete portfolio breakdown. My new task is to write a Visual Basic script that can query the net to get daily prices & populate the Prices.xls spreadsheet.

I did not know you could link up Excel sheets. I will have to try that.

I used to keep a record of all my investment but what I face is that keeping record than doing the maths all this stuffs are very time consuming. But if you think you can keep a track of everything than yes it will give you some competitive advantages over other.

Record keeping is a lengthy as well as time consuming process but still it help you to know your current investment situation.

From the looks of you, I can say that you are looking for something safe. Lower the risk, lower the gain. There is a competitive intelligence in finding the better option. Bond is good but Mutual Fund has safer cash flows. Go to different institutes and see if you can find anything special.
