No, I've never heard anyone mention China or India as future economic
powerhouses.

Are you being ironic?

I'm NEVER ironic. In fact, they would have never let me out of the
looney bin if I had been caught using irony or sarcasm.

You may have different customs in your country, but around here, irony
is a rather harsh accusation, and I recommend you look up the
definition in an American-style dictionary to avoid embarrassing
yourself in the future.
Irony, an accusation?? Embarrassing myself?? Now I'm really puzzled.

I do happen to have The Random House Dictionary, bought in the US.

Irony. 1. a figure of speech in which the literal meaning of a locution
is the opposite of that intended, esp. as in the Greek sense, when the
locution understates the effect intended. 2. an utterance or the use of
words to express a meaning which is different from, and often the direct
opposite of, the literal meaning. ...(several in the same vein)... 9. an
objectively or humorously sardonic utterance, disposition, quality etc.

All of the given meanings are just what any literate person in NZ would
understand by the word. What do you understand, that you take it as an
insult?

So you were not being ironic, in fact the whole concept of irony sounds
foreign to you (unless you are being _really_ ironic).

In that case my response is: I've frequently seen China and India
mentioned as future economic powerhouses.

Let me write a trillion dollars in hot checks, and I can make things
look pretty good, too.
Well, you can't, whereas the US can. Therein lies the difference.

Argentina had to pay its debt off in dollars; the U.S. has to pay its
debt off in dollars. That sounds like a similarity, but is actually a
very important difference. When you understand this, you will become
enlightened.

Not a chance. The majority of Americans are only focused on

Even self interest will eventually bring them around. It'll just
take longer.

It's not locked up, actually. Where do you think all the money came
from that kept consumer spending propped up during the recent
recession that's now characterized as mild? It came from people
refinancing their mortgages and cashing out equity.

I'm not saying that doesn't mean we won't have a housing bubble that
will burst. But that will come because people have overextended
themselves financially and/or used alternative products like
interest-only mortgages without truly understanding their
ramifications.

Simply not true. Consumer spending has continued to be robust. Were it
not, we'd be in a hell of a lot more trouble than we are now, since
it's 2/3 of our GDP.

uhhhhhh, the last time i checked, the monthly GNP statistic had nothing
to do with congressional spending habits. go convert a democRAT to
republicanism.
