I have been a user of MSM for many years. At the beginning of each
year, I try to archive the previous year's data to make a more
manageable sized file. My data file is now at 20,000 kB. My account
consists of a few closed accounts, multiple banks, savings, checking,
credit and retirement accounts. It also includes savings and college
funds accounts for my kids.
My question is, What can I do to make this file smaller and more
manageable.
If I remove the kids' accounts to another file will this help and what
is the easiest way to do this?
Is there a way to start fresh and import only those active accounts to
make it smaller but not lose the data needed for day to day account
management?
What advise can you provide?

The advice I'd provide is that the file size isn't a real indication of much
of anything besides the headache to back it up. Mine's 53MB and counting.
I've never archived. I'm not sure what you find unmanageable about a 20MB
file, so I can't really help much with that. If it's just backups, consider
a USB thumb drive. They are getting Very Cheap.
Investment price history can take up lots of space. In M03 (M04?) and newer
there are some tools to remove old price history.
The easiest way to move accounts to a new file is to copy the existing file,
delete the subset in the old file and delete everything else in the new
file.
As to how to start Almost Over and save all of the drudge work of
eliminating the obsolete stuff but not having to setup the current stuff,
there really is not a good way to do this. This is one (minor) reason many
of us just let the file Grow and Grow and Grow.
