An oddity for the archives |
|
|
I thought that "lost" windows were essentially Windows 95/98/ME
phenomena; but I just found out otherwise. I also do not
remember it ever happening to me with any other application but
Quicken (though I always believed it could).
Today when I ran Excel with a very small spreadsheet (using a
shortcut to the Target spreadsheet to start it from the
desktop), it never would "Restore": it started minimized (when
it was not setup to do that), and would never Restore. When I
closed it and restarted it, it seemed to do almost the same
thing, but after closer examination, a very small window had
appeared in the upper left hand corner of the screen ... it was
the Excel spreadsheet. (I did not attempt the usual "Quicken"
fix that we have recommended in this group, I didn't get the
chance). I resized the mini-window with the cursor, and all was
well.
To make it a little more intriguing, Q2002 was minimized at the
time (as were Outlook and Outlook Express). And I had IE6
looking at a web site. Norton Anti-virus and Zone Alarm were in
the systray. But do not jump to conclusions; I have had the
previously named apps plus several more running in the past
without triggering this phenomena.
I guess the main reason for posting this, seemingly off topic
comment, is to note (or confirm) that the problem (the "lost"
window) can occur to other applications besides Quicken and
under other operating systems than Win 95/98/ME ... for those
who may not have known that already.

See above apology. Excel 2002 (10.6501.6714) SP3.

Hi, John,
Certainly no apology warranted! I understood the purpose of your post was
to identify that the Q/ME combination isn't the only one susceptible to the
"lost window" effect.
I was curious since I use Excel (2002) heavily daily and have never
experienced the phenomenon.
I still (unbelievably) use ME. I only experienced a "lost window" once with
Q2002, and never since I deleted NAV about a year ago. Just looking for a
commonality; perhaps NAV is the culprit?

Hi, John,

I was thinking that I remind folks here all the time of the
importance of including pertinent information like Quicken
versions or os in their posts when applicable; I just felt dumb
forgetting to do it myself.

My sympathies. :)

I thought it odd myself, especially since I thought my running
application load was fairly small; I have 256mb of memory and I
usually have much more running than I did when the lost window
occurred. In fact when I had ME, I could consistently reproduce
the problem, but was never able to do so before with XP with the
exact same approach.
I can't remember that far back, but I think that NAV was running
back when I had lost window problems on ME too. But I have had
NAV running all the time I have had XP and not seen the problem
until yesterday.
One new app that I have only had for a very short while and
which I am getting ready to give the deep six to (for other
reasons) is Zone Alarm. I have no idea what sort of memory user
it is but so far it is much more trouble than it is worth.
Why did you get rid of NAV?

TY. I reboot several times a day to regain system resources. I can't
upgrade to XP on this old box (P-Pro 200 MHz). For several years I have
wanted to get a modern system, but just never seem to find the time; I keep
taking on too many projects, but I see a break coming up in May...

Although I was a diehard Norton user since the 80's, I have found too many
incompatibilities with Norton/ME and, quite frankly, feel their software has
lost the quality it once had. The final straw came with my attempted
upgrade from NAV 2002 to 2003. 2003 just would not install until 2002 was
completely uninstalled, which the software failed to do. I had to download
at least two utilities from Symantec just to remove certain registry entries
left by previous versions of NAV. And then, once installed, I started
having beaucoup problems that I eventually traced to NAV. The ME NGs I lurk
in (I know, consider the source!) are pretty consistent with NAV problems
and Norton in general. When I upgrade my system I may give NAV another
shot. For now, I use AVG and have no perceptible side effects, and much
better available system resources and performance.

I run Win 2000 on an old P-Pro 200 box. with 256 MB of RAM. How much
RAM in your system. Once I installed XP on this system and it ran
OK, but I didn't want to go out and purchase XP, on the assumption
that I would "soon" (well sometime) migrate to a much newer system.
And then have to deal with all the XP "validation problems."

Off topic, but same here. Been a customer since the early days of DOS
with Norton, when it was still "Peter Norton Computing"

Yes, I remember. So it isn't only Quicken that has problems with
uninstall. It's unbelievable (but not really) that Symantec would
produce a product with such a crappy uninstall/upgrade. But it's
quite clear that Symantec is truly milking their consumer Norton
brand. Long past the time to find replacements for System Works.
