There are cube systems about 1/4 the size of a small desktop. They
are built using small form system boards. No need for a diskette
drive so 2 3.5in. hdd/cd slots does the job. Lightweight LCD monitor
and you have a lug-able solution. Look in Computer Shopper magazine.

I have an Inspiron 6000 and it's alright for what I paid for it (about a
grand with 2 year breakage warranty). A couple things...the smaller Dell
laptops that weigh 5 pounds or less are overpriced and flakey as hell.
The larger one, 9300, is a desktop replacement and is on the heavy side.
It's the system they market towards the game players and power users.
Anyway, if you get the Dell 6000 or 9300, get either the WSXGA or WUXGA
screen or you're wasting $$.
Things to watch out for on newer Dell's are hardware gremlins that they
refuse to acknowledge. Read some of these complaints:
http://www.google.com/search?q=dell+GX270+recall
The IBM (now Lenovo) Thinkpad T43 is a great, compact laptop and weighs
right around 5 pounds. They are made in China but I've setup about a
hundred of them and the build quality is excellent. Lenovo is planning to
agressively market the brand and is selling the T43 in Office Depot
stores as of last week. I'd get a look at in person, pictures won't help
you get an idea of how nice it really is. |

Yes, and 640K is enough for anyone. *rollseyes*
It sounds silly today. Decades of Microsoft's "good enough software"
has bloated our hard-drives. I once wrote a complete word processor
in 16k. The first real job I had in the software biz was writing some
components for a realtime operating system that ran on a system with a
256k hard drive. What can really be done with 640k? A lot, if the
time and effort is spent to do it. Life goes on, empires are built,
the lowest common denominator eventually rises with technology.

Nice transition there, LOL. |

well, when CPU's got faster and memory got cheaper, the tendency to
be lazy as a programmer increased even faster than the above.
the result is that today's PC's while theoretically running about
4000 times as fast as those sold in 1985, to the user there isn't
that much of a difference.

They don't. That is the problem. MS looks around,
sees what the movers and shakers are doing,
and tries to figure out a way to buy or "borrow" the technology.

Yet it will sell to the masses, it will soak up all the performance of
todays computers and it will allow about the same amount of actual work to
be carried out as all the other computers did.

What I meant was:
Bill Gates and Michael Dell have the majority of their money tucked away;
enough for generations. They do not need more. It is a game for them. If the
stock tanks, their only (minor) problem is whether they were able to unload
it and if the SEC take offense.
Management does not have to think or do; It is the stockholders problem to
worry about what happens to the business.

Is that "never within the time available before the end of the universe" or
not within the next two years (which is never to a trader).
One can, in the shops right now, buy a USD 150 portable DVD player.
That thing, while lacking a keybord, already have *plenty* of MIPS for
whatever "office" tasks one does. My mobile has more MIPS, more memory and
more colours than my 286 PC that I paid USD 2000 for. I did work on that.
Millions of people did.
Most of the compexity and expense comes from PeeCee dogma where everything
should be "upgradable" e.t.c.
If one dispense with "upgrades" - that no non-nerd type does anyway - solder
everything in and/or stick it in a few chips to get the cost so low that we
throw away the thing when the software no longer fits or the battery does
not work anymore.
One could imagine a "work only" laptop computer retailing for about USD 100.
When the market matures and people buy computers according to their real
needs and not the needs of Dell, Microsoft, AMD e.t.c. then it will happen.
