Even with the recent haircut, Dell is still a 65B cap company, larger than
Apple. It is not right. I think the fair assessment should be about 40B.
That means, we will see another 33% decline in short term.
The time has caught up with Dell. During 1999 to 2002 recession, Dell stock
hasn't corrected much like other big cap high tech companies.

if I recall correctly from the PBS "revenge of the Nerds" it was named
Q-DOS for "quick and dirty operating system" written over a weekend by
an IBM geek. The "Q" was later dropped |

Gary Kildall wrote CP/M (Control Program for Microcomputers).
Tim Paterson of Seattle Computer Products bought a CP/M manual
and used it as the basis to write QDOS,
the "Quick and Dirty Operating System", in 6 weeks.
Microsoft bought the rights to QDOS for $50,000.
MS-DOS, the "Microsoft Disk Operating System",
was based on QDOS, and licensed to IBM,
setting the stage for Gates to amass a net worth
(at one time) of as much as $120 billion dollars.
I have a number of books in my library which spell out
all of the gory details of the early days of microcomputers. |

Gates never wrote a worthwhile piece of software in his life. But I
do love how he calls himself "chief software architect" that's
hilarious.
the only reason he went anywhere is that his father, a lawyer, set up
microsoft and loaned the money to get it going.

I've heard some people talk highly of their Dell laptops and
recommend them
to others. I am thinking I might get a Dell laptop myself (dude)
and use
my old desktop mainly for file backups.

It sounds silly today. Decades of Microsoft's "good enough software"
has bloated our hard-drives. I once wrote a complete word processor
in 16k. The first real job I had in the software biz was writing some
components for a realtime operating system that ran on a system with a
256k hard drive. What can really be done with 640k? A lot, if the
time and effort is spent to do it. Life goes on, empires are built,
the lowest common denominator eventually rises with technology. New
software graduates are turned out by the tens of thousands, only a
handful of them understand what's going on at lower levels, most just
know how to write limp-along applications using existing interfaces to
code that was written in a hurry to make a profit large enough to buy
the CEO a nice yacht. Programmers become a commodity supplied by
India or Pakistan or wherever as jobs are moved offshore so the CEO
can buy a bigger yacht. Greenspan made sure that the chains of debt
are firmly in place and got out without having to deal with the
repercussions, those are the next guy's problem; the previous software
company CEO retired with millions, the repercussions are the next
guy's problem. The software industry is a sad thing, compared to what
it could have been if the CEO's customers had not been so ignorant and
the CEO had not been so greedy. So it goes, this is the land of the
free where condo associations tell us which hand to wipe with and
greed turns the wheels. Finding new ways to inspire greed is the only
way to keep the wheels from grinding to a halt as the guy at the
bottom of the corporate ladder looks up and says "Why bother?" |

I LOVE laptops, the power goes off and they just keep on like the
freakin' everready bunny.
Of course you're right about the screen being quarter-size and the
keyboard being funky, but you can plug in a larger monitor and a real
keyboard if you have the space for them.
What we really need is a briefcase built like Dr Who's Tardis,
remember that one? |
