Upgrading to 2006 and to an New Computer |
|
|
I have used an earlier version of Microsoft Money that came installed on the
computer when I bought it, but when I bought a new computer all that was
installed was Quicken. Quicken wouldn't allow me to use my old Microsoft
Money information, unless I upgraded to a $100 version of the software. If I
download Money 2006 onto my new computer, can I transfer my old information
to the new computer and have Money 2006 read it? If so, how? Thanks.

Yes.
There are some caveats and potential issues:
- Provided that you get a version of the same localization (Money US or
Money UK, say) you had before.
- If the version of Money on your older computer was old enough, M06 may not
deal with the file. (This may just be if it was password-protected--I'm not
clear on the underlying issue yet. Removing the password first in the old
version/on the old machine before moving the file may solve this problem. If
not, there are other ways. See several updates from yesterday to the thread
"Upgrading from Money 98 to 2006 Problems".)
- DO NOT DOWNLOAD M06. Go to the store and buy it. You can almost always get
a better price and reinstallation or installation on a laptop or whatever
will be much, much easier. Some people have problems beyond that noted
earlier trying to upgrade files. These are rare. Check back if you get
there.
How? Get the new version. Install it. Move your .MNY data file from the old
machine to the new machine. (Best to use a USB thumb drive, writable CD,
network, or whatever you did with your other data.) Double click on the
moved .MNY file. Money will detect the back-level file, rename its extension
to one specific to the original version that created it (e.g., Money v.12 or
Money 2004 files become [original name].M12), and copy its data to a new,
upgraded, data file named [original name].MNY.
All that having been said, I have reservations about recommending M06 and
refuse to recommend M05. See mine at http://umpmfaq.info/Money2005.htm and
its corollary page at http://umpmfaq.info/Money2006.htm. I've been doing
double data entry in M04 and M06 for something like two months now. I'm
still not sold on M06. It seems somehow slightly less offensive than
M05--perhaps I'm just mellowing--but it also is proving very unstable in my
environment with my data. Do your own due diligence.
