Volume-Price Bars |
|
|
I have developed a new type of chart. It shows the relative volume for
each price during an interval.
http://home.att.net/~geoffrey.slinker/maverick/VolumeBars.html
I am a Data Visualization person, not a Technical Analyst. I strive to
find new ways of presenting more data that is relative.
In a bar or candlestick chart with the volume plotted below, you can
have some interesting interval data:
The Open, Close, High, and Low prices for the interval, and the total
volume for the interval.
Volume-Price charts add to the data previously mentioned. Added is the
volume for each price point in the interval.
Suppose during the inteval 10,000 shares were traded. The open was
12.00 and the close was 10.00. The high as 13.00 and the low was 10.00.
How many shares traded at the opening price? How many shares traded at
the lowest price? The Volume-Price chart shows this information!
Please share the idea. I am a computer scientist, not a trader or tech
analyst. I have no connections in the trading world. Please share the
idea with any and all. The paper is found at:

I think it would be very interesting to take a historical candlestick
chart and identify some of the common patterns (morning star....) and
plot that same data with a Volume-Price chart. Then after identifying
the common candlestick patterns look and see if any of the patterns
failed to indicate correctly. If they failed to indicate correctly,
does the volume-price chart give indications as to why the prediction
was incorrect. Maybe there is an analyst that would like to work on
this!?!
Sincerely,
Geoff

Geoff, I went to your sight after your previous post. Although I am a rank
amateur, your work looks promising to me. However, you have all the data,
all of the code, and all of the associated programming knowledge for your
project. I think it would be far easier and much more rewarding for you to
program the candlestick patterns onto the same screen and make the
comparison yourself! You will then be able to come to more applicable
conclusions on your own project. THEN, publish the results here with a link
back and try to get feedback as to what you might have missed or just simply
could do better. The only way to turn this into a viable product is to find
out what the TRUE traders (not me) need to function properly within their
own trading environment.

Interesting, but....
How is this information different from Stockchart's Price/Volume? You will
find that info at the left of the chart, represented by horizontal gray and
pink bars.

Re: Volume-Price Bars |

Well, let's see what they have to say about their Price by Volume
Chart.
http://stockcharts.com/education/IndicatorAnalysis/indic_PBV.htm
The histogram bars of the Price by Volume Chart show the volume for the
ENTIRE period of the chart. My Volume-Price bars are just as the state,
bar based, which means interval based. The Volume-Price bar shows the
volume for a price duing the time of the bar, not the sum time of all
the bars displayed in the chart.
The Volume-Price bar is for someone looking for information during the
interval. Let's suppose you are following some instrument using 5
minute bars. Suppose a classic bearish signal is presented yet the
signal doesn't show what happens next. Which price during that interval
had the most volume? Does this help understand why the signal didn't
play out?
The chart you show is indeed informative, but the information is in a
different frame of reference.
Also, my Volume-Price chart could be used in conjunction with this
Price by Volume histogram!
Thank you for your comments,
Geoff |

Hi Geoff,
I like you charts and there are a lot more ways to show the data. OHLC are
all exceptions. Four individual trades in a day and the extremes at that
(time extremes, price extremes). Proper weighting of intraday ticks is the
only way to go (oh, and that's not just on volume, you need to look at
trades (tickets, slips, etc..) too and better yet, if you can see who). A
big piece of volume might merely be a fund manager moving big chunks around.
