Helpful hint - reinstalling Q2006 |
|
|
Intuit recently released R3 of Q2006. I tried the One-Step Update, which
failed with a message that the patching engine experienced a problem. No
surprise; I almost always have to download the manual updates. So,
downloaded R3 which is only 1 MB. Still got the patching engine error - AND
could no longer do any on-line activity in Quicken. No error message, just
a very rude dump completely out of Quicken back to the WinXP desktop.
Did a super-validate. Q2006 found an error in the QEL - again, not a
surprise. Happens frequently and not the actual problem. Didn't fix it.
Uninstalled and re-installed Q2006. No dice; still no on-line activity, no
One-Step Update. Followed Intuit's on-line help (yeah, right - what an
oxymoron) which suggested uninstalling, using MSCONFIG to turn off all
services except the MS Installer, reboot and install. That didn't help.
Uninstalled again and rebooted. And checked the directory where Q2006 was
installed. Even after an uninstall, I found dozens of .dll's hanging
around, and the programs like QW.EXE still here. I deleted the entire
contents of the folder and all subfolders. (I store data on another drive
partition.)
Turned all the services back on, rebooted, reinstalled. Ran One-Step Update
and it worked perfectly. On-line activity was back, registers synchronized.
So, moral of the story is - don't assume the Windows Add/Remote Program or
the Quicken Uninstaller works. Left over junk from previous versions or
previous releases can hang around.

On the Quicken 2006 CD is an install cleanup utility - qcleanui.exe.
You might want to try that next time.

I use Registry First Aid from Rosecitysoftware (payware) to clean up the
registry and remove unsued dll's etc.
So far this software hasn't screwed up any of my stuff. I (whoever I am)
recommend it wholeheatedly. Usual disclaimers apply.

Most product's complete-uninstalls aren't. |

Your post reminds me of the problem I had installing Q2005. For some
reason the install program would fail when trying to uninstall Q2004. I
got around the problem by renaming the QuickenW directory on my C drive
to xQuickenW. Then I installed Q2005 and after about a week of trouble
free use, I deleted the xQuickenW directory.

Hi, Don.
As part of beta-testing Windows Vista (formerly codenamed Longhorn), I've
installed Q2006 Basic several times. I "dual-boot" into each Windows
installation, insert the Quicken CD and let it Autorun and install - always
into the same location: E:\QuickenW. Often, the installer balks, saying
that I must first uninstall the existing installation. But I simply rename
(or delete) the QW.EXE file, then run the installer again - and it works!
The first time I run Quicken from there, if it wants to update (to R3,
currently), and I let it. But all my tweaks and settings and data fileset
are still there, ready to use in the new Windows. Each time I reboot,
whether into the same Windows version or a different one, Quicken is there.
;<)
(But this doesn't work in the latest build (5213) of Vista; the Intuit
installer fails. It worked in the earlier builds 5112 and 5219. It may be
a Vista problem, but I suspect Intuit.)
