registering Quicken 2006 Premier |
|
|
I reinstalled Quicken 2006 Premier do to a problem and am having trouble
registering it again to get rid of the "benefits to registering Quicken"
nags.
Help menu -> Register Quicken brings up a screen, but all I get is
script errors and a blank box. I've moved the mouse around and can't
seem to locate any "mouse over" areas. I can't refresh the screen or
reload it. And when I close it, it tells me registration is not complete.
I've done this with Firefox as my default browser. With Internet
Explorer as the default browser. Antivirus and Firewall active.
Antivirus and Firewall disabled.
Checked Quicken.com and registration has to be completed thru the
program. 800 number wants $18 so I hung up. Checked Quicken help, FAQs,
support, etc. Nothing I've come across addresses the problem of script
errors during the registration process.
I downloaded this version directly from Intuit and am currently running
release 3. The problem occured before R3 was installed on my computer.
Any and all help would be appreciated.
TIA,
Jerry

This seems to be happening all over. I thought it was only me, because I
run Quicken under CrossOver Office, but it seems to happen to people on
regular WinOSes. CrossOver simulates Win98.
Interestingly I fired up winxp/sp2 under vmware, accessed the same file,
and went through the registration with no problems. I've tried copying
whatever info is in the .ini files from one system to the other without
success.
As I don't use quicken.com for anything, it isn't much of a problem. Close
the window and the program keeps going, and it is able to download stuff
from the FIs. If you do use quicken.com call Intuit and tell them to fix
it (well, they know there's a problem already.)

Hmm, this is interesting. I'm running QP2006 (installed R1 from the
download), which I registered. I applied the R2 patch then uninstalled
Quicken and reinstalled from the download to revert to R1. I've since
applied the R3 patch and have seen no nag screens to register Quicken. In
other words, Quicken appears to think it's still registered in my case.

Margaret

After uninstalling a program, it's not all that uncommon for there to be
remaining Registry entries, in spite of all files and directories having
been removed.

I had a problem like this when I upgraded to 2004. Intuit's alleged
customer service operator stepped me through several secret
instructions, stuff like holding the alt key while clicking on the
online menu, find the Easter egg -- that kind of thing.
I'm sorry I don't remember the actual steps, but the point is this:
There's all kinds of secret junk built into quicken that is completely
nonintuitve that only their customer support folks know about. So, I'd
recommend you use their "chat" version of support, and you might be
surprised at what they can fix. Of course, it would be better if it
just worked, but that's apparently asking too much.
It's really sad, too, because 10 years ago I told someone that the only
piece of software I ever bought with which I was thoroughly pleased was
Quicken. I wouldn't say that today with a gun to my head. But if you
are like me, your entire financial life is wound up in quicken, and the
thought of finding an alternative is mind numbing, so it's easier to
just grind away at it.
Quicken has got to be the poster-child for why open source is the only
answer for mission critical software. Alas, GNUcash only runs on Linux
(there are some workarounds to run it on windows, but not for the faint
of heart); give it another year or two. People who have suffered with
Quicken say Money is alright, and vice-versa. The answer to which is
better seems to be "the other one." |

I should have mentioned that after I uninstalled, I edited the registry and
removed all entries related to Quicken and Intuit. But ... IIRC, the
registration flag (or whatever you want to call it), actually resides in
QUICKEN.INI. I didn't mess with that file. I'm presuming that got left
behind after the uninstall, but I haven't checked my Ghost images to be
sure.
