Retention Period for Decedent's Tax Returns? |
|
|
Decedent died January 2003. Final Form 1040 timely filed
and tax paid.
Estate Tax return filed in early 2004 (for period ending
12/31/2003) and = has been accepted by IRS. In other words,
Field Director provided = executor with letter setting forth
amount of Estate Tax due and stating = "Proof of payment in
the amount shown above releases you of personal = liability
(IRC 2204)." Executor has cancelled check covering payment
of = estate taxes.
Is there any need to keep any copies of decedent's forms
1040. Who = would IRS come after if they determined there
was a problem in the = 1040s?
Thanks in advance for any comments.
