1040x line 19 question |
|
|
I have a sort of detailed 1040X question.
For 2004 on my original Federal return I paid $389 in taxes.
On the revised 1040x return it looks like I should have paid
$163. The difference is $226 so it seems like I should get a
refund of $226 now.
On form 1040X the only way I could see to get this to come
out right was to enter the amount -389 on line 19. If I
enter the data this way the refund amount comes out as $226,
which I think is correct, but TurboTax flags it as an error
and says I can't enter a negative number on that line.
My question is whether entering -389 on this line is OK, or
if not if there is another way to fill out the 1040X form to
get the refund I think I should get.
Thanks a lot for any help.

Listen to TT. Enter a POSITIVE number on Line 19.

It looks to me like your problem is at line 17. Did you
include the $389 there? Line 19 is zero since you didn't
show a refund on your original return.

You should read the instructions for completing Line 19 of
the Form 1040X. Line 10 Column c should reflect that your
tax bill is 286 less than the original. Line 17 will have
the 389 you already paid. Line 18 has to be the total
payments you have already made and it should be 286 higher
than your revised tax bill. Line 19 will be zero as you
did not have an overpayment on your original return. Line 20
equals Line 18. Line 21 is zero. Line 22 should be 286 and
Line 23 will be 286 if you want the refund sent to you.

If you mean that you wrote a check for $389 and sent it in
when you filed your tax return, then that figure goes on
line 17, Form 1040X (amount of tax paid with original
return).

That fixed it. I had misread the instructions for line 17.
Thanks a lot for the help.
