Hi guys, first post here.
I'm a young adult about to graduate from college, and I need help picking my first credit card. I currently use my debit card for almost all of my transactions, but I'm planning on doing some traveling and I'd like to also get a credit card. I've got it down to a few options: capital one Cash Back, capital one low interest, or an AMEX card. I currently don't debt spend at all, which makes AMEX an attractive option. I also like the travel rewards they have. AMEX isn't accepted everywhere though, so I feel like I'm going to need a backup by default even if I go with an AMEX. The Cap One card, with no interest on foreign currency transactions, seems great. As for getting approved, I'm currently a grad student in his final year (two months left). I don't work now (obviously) but I have a nice paying job lined up starting in July. I have some student loans but that's it, no other debt, and a reasonable bank balance. Any thoughts, comments would be appreciative. I've found this process amazingly confusing with all the points, rates, miles, etc., so I'm just looking for some unbiased advice, thanks! |

First credit card on first post! People are leaving credit cards for the current economic condition. As you said by your self that you have debit card, think it ought to serve you a traveling purpose.

Yeah definitely stick to debit card. Why not try a visa/debit card. They can be used all over the world and you are only ever spending what you have.

You say you don't debt spend at all. So you really don't need a credit card unless you plan to start owing a balance.
I started out with a Phillip's 66 gas card when I was 18 to build my credit. Used it to fill up and paid it off every month. Worked great. |

Perhaps go with a card offered by your bank. That's a good way to build credit.

Hi,
Hey i think you should stick with your debit card for little more time because you are still studying and you don't want to fall in debt. A debit card takes the money right out of your account--instantly. Unlike a check, which has to clear your bank before being paid to whomever you write it for, a debit card pays them instantly as if you went to an ATM and got them cash. You can charge a credit card up to your limit--and pay it off over time, but you will also pay interest and fees for the privilege. So think again to take a credit card, its up to you.Do you want to pay interest while studying?....

CC is the worst debt you can get easily. Be careful while using it as it can easily trap people in debt which then start multiplying. Don't be scared just be careful.

My advise is to go with the The Cap One card if it serves you better. As you are just planning for Some Travel, having Credit with you,you can get off from any worst situations in your journey.. So try for that if you can go with Credit. |

I'm not a big fan of AMEX cards. They are not accepted at LOTS of places. I prefer a Visa of some sort... I honestly don't even like MasterCard.
As a young adult, I can see why you might like to get a credit card to establish some credit. A debit card isn't quite the same in that regard. I am many years older than you and carry a debit card and one credit card (Visa). I buy EVERYTHING with my debit card (i.e. I pay cash for everything)... I ONLY use my Visa in cases of emergency, but always pay it off within the 1st billing cycle. |

Why would you want to get a credit card? To build credit? I find that to be a crazy comment. What do you need to build credit for? To be able to borrow money and good rates and pay it back. You can pretty much do anything without credit if you just choose to pay cash. True a lot of places pull your credit score to determine insurance rates etc. But I think its a much better trade off to pay slightly higher insurance rates than to keep myself in debt just so I can have a good credit score. I have not borrowed money in almost 5 years. I have seen my credit score fall but it doesnt bother be whatsoever. I am perfectly content paying for everything with cash
